Experiences with the Structure.io sensor

Hi!

I was wondering if anyone has (extensive) experience with the structure.io sensor?

Are the 3D scans as good as it looks in the videos (full-room measurements etc.)?

Thanks!

I can honestly say I was impressed. Just to be sure, we’re talking that thing you put on the iPad right?

We actually used the Structure.io scanner when we got scanned at the Sketchfab office . The results were very impressive. Their virtual reality showroom at CES was very neat too.

Hey Robert,

I have one and I’m very happy with it. For room scans, it’s best to use the iPad together with Occipital’s Skanect software, running on a PC or Mac on the same WiFi network - They call this ā€œUplinkā€ - but there is a room scanning app that runs on the stand-alone iPad too.

Most of my scans are either portraits or fairly small objects so I’m not very experienced with scanning rooms but the resolution should be good enough for many room scanning applications. Just don’t expect the textures ( colour ) to be great. If you’ve seen portraits that look uncannily realistic, that’ll be because the texture capture of the app is so good. The underlying mesh isn’t actually as detailed as you might expect.

If you have any more questions then fire away. I’m something of a Structure fanboy!

Cheers!

Good to know you like it as well. Is it safe to assume it’s the ā€˜best’ scanner for consumers on the market? I know it depends on context of usage, but still

@Filemon I does depend on use case, yes. The Structure’s resolution is really only a little better than the Xbox Kinect but it’s very much more convenient to use and, depending on the app that’s running, texture capture can be much ( much! ) better. When it comes to anything below, say 700mm in size, it looks very much like the new Einscan on Kickstarter would be better.

I’ve got a Matter and Form which is great for smaller objects, up to, say 150x200mm. That’s really a great little gizmo.

And finally, there’s Fuel3D aka Scanify, which takes really high resolution, coloured single-snap scans. You can stitch them together, to make a complete scan, easily enough. I’m looking forward to getting my hands on it at our up-coming London Sketchfab meetup.

So! Ya pays ya money, Ya takes ya choice. There’s really not one that does it all - But the Einscan looks like it’s closest to ideal.
